About Judge Ben

Judge Ben Robertson graduated from Sam Houston State University with Bachelors of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Sociology. He then graduated first in his class from Texas Tech University School of Law. During his graduate and legal studies, he served as a teaching assistant, independent instructor, and research assistant.

After receiving his license to practice law in Texas, Judge Ben worked in San Antonio for prestigious civil ligation firm Cox Smith Matthews Inc. (now Dykema Gossett) and was one of the five attorneys who founded energy litigation boutique Santoyo Wehmeyer, P.C., where he eventually was promoted to partner. While in private practice, Judge Ben earned his Board Certification in Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and regularly obtained multimillion dollar verdicts, including Top 20 and Top 50 verdicts in the state in 2015, 2016, and 2018. In 2021, Judge Ben joined the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals as staff attorney for Justice Lori I. Valenzuela. Having worked for the appellate court charged with reviewing decisions made by Bexar County district court judges, Judge Ben is uniquely qualified as a jurist who understands cases from an appellate perspective.

In September 2024, Judge Ben was appointed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to fill a vacancy in the 73rd Civil District Court in Bexar County where he served the unexpired term through December 31, 2024. Judge Ben was then appointed to the 226th Criminal District Court to fill a vacancy created and where he currently serves. In 2025, Judge Ben presided over the most trials of any of the 27 Bexar County district courts and had the highest clearance rate among the criminal district courts.

Judge Ben's career is dedicated to his passion for the law and the rule of law. He understands the daily impact the law has on Texas residents. Judge Ben has dedicated himself to perfecting his knowledge and expertise of the law, and since his appointment to a pattern jury charge committee in 2017 has served on committees focused on monitoring case law developments.

Judge Ben's heart has always been with civil law. His time spent serving in the 73rd District Court showcased the civil presiding system, local rules and procedures, and what needs exist for the Bexar County civil courts. Having efficiently and expeditiously run his own docket on the criminal side, Judge Ben knows what works and what doesn't work.

If elected to serve on the 225th Civil District Court, Judge Ben pledges to return the court to the Bexar County civil presiding system and work with his colleagues on the civil bench. Judge Ben believes judicial reform is best achieved by building consensus — not by threat or lawsuit. Judge Ben's legal exposure, learned knowledge and values, and experience have prepared him to serve on the 225th Civil District Court. He is committed to serving this court, its participants, and the community to the best of his ability once elected.
